Five cities change speech and allegiance “In that day” five Egyptian cities are said to “speak the language of Canaan” and to swear loyalty to Yahweh “of hosts.” This signals a visible cultural and political-religious shift toward Israel’s God. One of these cities receives a striking name: “the city of destruction,” hinting either at judgment remembered or a dramatic renaming that marks a break from the past.
Worship markers and Yahweh’s response to oppression Egypt will have an altar “in the midst” of the land and a pillar “at the border,” both explicitly “to Yahweh.” These serve as public evidence—“a sign and a witness”—that Egypt is now oriented toward Yahweh’s authority. Verses 18–22 pivot from judgment imagery to unexpected inclusion: Egypt, previously a target of divine action, becomes a place where Yahweh is honored and publicly acknowledged. The repeated phrase “in that day” links this turn to the larger sequence of future reversals in this section, where nations are humbled, reordered, and then redirected toward ordered life under Yahweh’s rule.
Historical Context
In Isaiah’s time (late eighth century BC), Judah lived under intense pressure from Assyria, and Egypt often appeared as a tempting political partner for anti-Assyrian resistance. Egyptian influence in the southern Levant rose and fell through shifting local rulers and alliances, and Judah’s leaders sometimes looked to Egypt for protection rather than to their own covenant commitments. Against that backdrop, Isaiah 19 addresses Egypt not merely as a foreign power but as a society that can be destabilized and reshaped. The imagery of altars, border pillars, and public vows fits the ancient world where worship sites and monuments signaled political loyalty, identity, and recognized authority.

How to understand “city of destruction” (v. 18). Some see it as a meaningful label pointing to judgment remembered or renaming after a decisive turning point. Others think the phrase may reflect a textual naming issue (a different original name or wordplay), making the exact identification uncertain.
The passage compresses big changes into short images. Several expressions (“language of Canaan,” “altar…pillar,” “savior…defender,” “city of destruction”) can naturally function either as concrete predictions or as symbolic shorthand for loyalty and public identity. The text itself does not explain why there are five cities, identify the “savior,” or clarify whether the worship markers are literal constructions, so interpreters must infer based on how prophetic poetry often works and on ancient practices where monuments and altars signaled allegiance.
