Literary Context
This scene continues the Jerusalem crisis narrative in Isaiah 36–37, where Assyrian officials attempt to break Judah’s resolve through speeches and a written threat. After earlier messages and Hezekiah’s initial appeal for prophetic word (37:1–7), the conflict narrows to a direct confrontation between Sennacherib’s claims and Yahweh’s identity. The passage functions as a hinge: the threat is now formally presented, the king responds not with counter-propaganda but with prayer, and the story prepares for the divine answer that follows (37:21–35) and its outcome (37:36–38).
Historical Context
The episode is set during Assyria’s dominance in the late eighth century BC, when its armies campaigned across the Levant and pressured small kingdoms into tribute and submission. Judah, ruled by Hezekiah, faced invasion after Assyria had already damaged many fortified towns and imposed severe political and economic strain. Sennacherib’s message reflects typical imperial rhetoric: the Assyrian king portrays resistance as futile and frames local gods as unable to protect their lands. Hezekiah’s response assumes the temple in Jerusalem as the central place for seeking Yahweh’s help amid an international power struggle.
Theological Significance
Hezekiah treats the Assyrian threat as something to be brought directly into Yahweh’s presence. The story highlights a contrast between imperial messaging (a written intimidation letter) and a royal response that is not a counter-message but prayer in Yahweh’s house.

The request and the public aim Hezekiah asks Yahweh “our God” to save Judah from Sennacherib’s power. The stated result is public and international: that all kingdoms would know Yahweh alone is Yahweh, implying that the outcome will function as a demonstration of who truly rules.
Hezekiah’s prayer names who Yahweh is before asking for help: “God of Israel,” “enthroned above the cherubim,” the only God over “all the kingdoms of the earth,” and maker of heaven and earth. Those are explicit claims in the prayer, not later commentary.
He also makes a careful argument about Assyria’s track record. He concedes their real devastation, yet denies that Assyria’s victories prove their gods are stronger. The defeated “gods” were human-made wood and stone, so their destruction does not settle the question of Yahweh’s power.
Two phrases invite different readings.
First, “who sits above the cherubim” can be taken as temple-based imagery (Yahweh’s rule associated with the ark and the sanctuary), or as wider throne imagery that stresses heavenly kingship. In either case, Hezekiah is not treating Yahweh as a merely local god.
Second, “who has sent to defy the living God” can be read as focusing on Sennacherib himself as the one defying, or on the content of his “words” as the act of defiance. The passage links them closely: the sender and the message work together as the challenge.
The Hebrew phrasing allows the “defy” idea to attach naturally to either the sender or the sent message, and both fit the immediate context. Likewise, the “cherubim” line draws on temple language while also pointing beyond the temple, so interpreters differ on how much weight to put on each direction.
It presents Yahweh as uniquely God over every kingdom and as creator of heaven and earth (explicit prayer claims), set against Assyria’s attempt to frame the conflict as just another conquest. It also frames the desired outcome of rescue as public knowledge: deliverance would serve as a sign so “all the kingdoms of the earth” recognize Yahweh alone. The text therefore ties Judah’s survival to a wider claim about who truly rules the world (an inference grounded in v. 20’s stated purpose). Isaiah 37:16
