51:12-13Meaning
Comfort confronts fear and forgetfulness God begins with emphatic self-identification: he is the one who comforts. He challenges the audience’s fear by contrasting fragile humans—who will die and fade like grass—with the Maker who formed heavens and earth. The problem is not only fear of the oppressor but also that this fear has displaced memory of Yahweh. The closing question—“where is the fury of the oppressor?”—presses the idea that the oppressor’s rage is not ultimate or permanent.
