55:10Meaning
Rain and snow that do not “return” without effect The verse starts with a comparison: rain and snow come down from the sky and are not described as immediately going back up. Instead, they water the earth. The result is visible and practical: the ground produces growth (“bring forth and bud”), which then supports both farming and daily meals—seed for the next cycle and bread for today.
Unit 2 (v. 11a): God’s word parallels the weather’s effectiveness
The comparison is applied directly: God’s word goes out from his mouth. Like rain and snow that travel from sky to soil, the word is pictured as moving outward with an intended destination and effect.
Unit 3 (v. 11b): Not returning “empty” and achieving intent
God says his word will not return to him “void” (empty, without results). Instead, it will accomplish what he pleases. The focus is not on the hearer’s response in this moment but on the word’s built-in effectiveness in producing the outcome God intends.
Unit 4 (v. 11c): “Prosper” in the purpose it was sent for
The verse ends by restating the same idea with different words: the word will succeed in the very matter for which God sent it. The logic closes the loop—sending, accomplishing, and returning with completed purpose, rather than coming back unused.
