Historical Context
Jeremiah spoke in Judah’s last decades as regional power shifted from Assyria to Babylon and local kings faced pressure to submit or resist. Political instability, alliances, and looming invasion created a setting where national “uprooting” or “planting” felt immediate rather than theoretical. Jeremiah’s messages often confronted public injustice and rival worship practices alongside foreign-policy choices, because all of these shaped the community’s direction. This passage frames national outcomes as contingent on moral and practical turning, rather than as fixed simply by current strength or plans.
