Jeremiah speaks during Judah’s last decades before Babylon’s conquest, when Jerusalem faced repeated foreign pressure and internal political scrambling. The Valley of Hinnom (with Topheth) was associated with abhorrent practices and stood as a grim symbol of Judah’s collapse in loyalty and public life. In the ancient Near East, siege warfare regularly brought famine, disease, and social breakdown, and conquered cities could be left with bodies unburied and exposed.
