When the people, a prophet, or a priest asks Jeremiah, “What is the oracle/burden of Yahweh?” he is told to answer with a reversal: “What oracle! I will cast you off,” says Yahweh (Jeremiah 23:33). Anyone persisting in the phrase is said to face punishment, including consequences for the household (Jeremiah 23:34).
Instead of repeating the slogan, the community is instructed to ask, “What has Yahweh answered?” and “What has Yahweh spoken?” (Jeremiah 23:35). The rationale given is that “each person’s own word becomes his burden,” because the community has distorted the words of the living God (Jeremiah 23:36).
