Inner recognition and renewed belonging Yahweh promises to “give them a heart to know me,” meaning an inner capacity and orientation that leads to recognizing “that I am Yahweh.” The relationship formula follows: “they shall be my people, and I will be their God.” The closing line gives the relational result: “they shall return to me with their whole heart,” describing a comprehensive, undivided turning back.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Jeremiah’s “two baskets of figs” vision in Jeremiah 24:1–10. The good figs represent the people taken into exile, while the bad figs represent those left in Jerusalem who will face further disaster. Verses 6–7 expand what “good” means for the exiles: Yahweh’s attention results in restoration to the land and long-term establishment there, and it culminates in a repaired relationship marked by true recognition of Yahweh and renewed loyalty.
Historical Context
Jeremiah speaks during Judah’s unraveling under Babylonian pressure, after an early deportation that removed King Jehoiachin and many skilled people to Babylon (late 7th to early 6th century BC). Many in Judah likely assumed those still in Jerusalem were safer or more favored, while the deportees were disgraced. Jeremiah’s vision reverses that expectation: the exiles are portrayed as the group Yahweh intends to preserve and re-establish. The “return to this land” anticipates a future political shift enabling resettlement and rebuilding.
Theological Significance
Jeremiah 24:6–7 presents Yahweh as actively committed to the well-being of the exiles pictured as the “good figs.” Explicitly, he says he is watching them “for good,” will bring them back to the land, and will “build” and “plant” them in a way meant to last (not quickly reversed). This restoration is both public (return, rebuilding) and inward (a new capacity to “know” Yahweh), leading to renewed covenant belonging (“my people…their God”).

The text also ties the external return and stability to relational repair: Yahweh gives “a heart to know me,” and the result is that “they shall return to me with their whole heart.” The return is not just geographic; it is loyalty and recognition of who Yahweh is.
Some readers take “build” and “plant” mainly as literal rebuilding of towns, farms, and population life after exile. Others think the language also (or especially) points to long-term social stability—secure community life under Yahweh’s protection—using construction and agriculture as images for durable restoration.
There is also discussion about timing. Some read the promise as focused on the near future return from Babylon. Others think the wording (“not pull them down…not pluck them up”) reaches beyond the first return, pointing to a more complete, lasting restoration that later events only partly matched.
On “know me,” some emphasize recognition and true worship (no longer treating Yahweh like one deity among many). Others stress that “know” includes lived loyalty—knowing Yahweh in a relational sense that reshapes behavior—since it is paired with “whole heart” return.
The verbs “build/plant” can describe physical rebuilding, but they are also common prophetic pictures for establishing a people securely. Likewise, “return” can mean coming back to the land or turning back in loyalty, and here both senses appear together. The passage is short and poetic, so it does not spell out how much is immediate vs. extended, or exactly how inward change works across the whole group.
