Yahweh speaks and asserts unmatched ability The word of Yahweh comes to Jeremiah. Yahweh identifies himself as God over “all flesh” and asks a pointed question: if he rules all living people, can anything be too difficult for him? The question sets up that what follows is fully within his power.
The announced outcome—Jerusalem will fall and burn Because of what Yahweh has just stated, he declares he will hand “this city” over to the Chaldeans and to Nebuchadnezzar, who will capture it. The attackers will enter, set the city on fire, and burn it. The burning is linked to the houses where rooftop worship took place—incense to Baal and drink offerings to other gods—actions described as provoking Yahweh.
A long record of evil, shared across society Yahweh explains the “for” behind the judgment: Israel and Judah have done what is evil from their youth, repeatedly provoking him by what they make and do. Historical Context
The setting is the last phase of Judah’s kingdom, when Babylon’s forces are actively attacking Jerusalem and the outcome is closing in. “Chaldeans” refers to the Babylonian side, and Nebuchadnezzar is named as the imperial king who will take the city. The passage assumes common practices in late Judah that Jeremiah elsewhere condemns: rooftop offerings to other deities, use of high places, and the notorious rites in the Valley of the son of Hinnom. They also built high places of Baal in the Valley of the son of Hinnom and made sons and daughters pass through fire to Molech—something Yahweh says he did not command and did not even bring to mind—an act labeled an abomination that led Judah into wrongdoing.
God also identifies himself as “the God of all flesh” and frames the coming events with a question about his ability: nothing is too hard for him (explicit claim). The destruction is described in concrete terms—capture and burning—and the reasons are stated repeatedly: ongoing evil, widespread idolatry, and refusal to accept God’s instruction (explicit claims).
The causes are not limited to one group. The text spreads blame across the whole society, including political leaders and religious leaders (explicit claim). It highlights specific practices: rooftop offerings to Baal and other gods, setting “abominations” inside the temple, and child sacrifice in the Valley of Hinnom (explicit claims).
Two phrases can be understood in more than one reasonable way.
“From their youth” (v. 30). Some take this as describing Israel/Judah from the “early days” of national life (a long historical pattern). Others take it as a comment about each new generation repeating the same pattern. Both readings fit the passage’s main point: the wrongdoing is entrenched and longstanding.
“It didn’t come into my mind” (v. 35). Some read this as strong language for “I never commanded or approved this” and “it is utterly against my will.” Others worry it might imply God was surprised. The immediate context strongly supports the first sense—God rejects the practice and denies that it came from his instruction—while the passage as a whole also stresses God’s power and foreknowledge of the coming judgment (explicit claims).
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew-style wording can sound, in modern English, like statements about internal thoughts or knowledge. Readers then ask whether such phrases are meant as emotional and moral rejection (“this is unthinkable”) or as a claim about what God did not anticipate. The surrounding lines (God’s stated plan to hand over the city, and “I didn’t command it”) pull interpretation toward moral repudiation rather than surprise.
What this passage clearly contributes The passage ties divine judgment to named causes: idolatry in private homes, corruption of the temple, and extreme violence presented as worship. It also combines two claims that shape the theology of the chapter: (1) God’s rule is not confined to Judah (“God of all flesh”), and (2) God uses historical agents (Babylon and its king) to carry out what he has announced.
