The message reaches the king The officials enter the court and verbally report the contents of the scroll to the king. The scroll itself has been stored in the chamber of Elishama the scribe. The king then sends Jehudi to retrieve it, and Jehudi reads it aloud to the king and the surrounding princes, making the reading a public court event.
The king destroys the scroll while it is being read The king sits in his winter-house in the ninth month with a brazier fire in front of him. As Jehudi reads, the king waits for “three or four leaves” (sections) and then cuts them off with a knife and throws them into the fire. This repeats until the entire scroll is burned up.

This scene sits within the larger narrative of Jeremiah 36, where Jeremiah’s spoken words are written down by Baruch and circulated publicly. Earlier, the scroll is read to the people and then to officials, who become concerned and bring the matter to the royal court. Verses 20–26 show the critical royal response: the message reaches the highest authority and is rejected in a dramatic, physical way. The episode sets up what follows in the chapter: the consequences of destroying the scroll and the continuation of the message despite suppression (see Jeremiah 36:20–26).
Historical Context
The passage assumes a functioning royal court with scribes, chambers for documents, and officials who advise the king. The setting in the “winter-house” during the ninth month points to a colder season when indoor heating would be used, matching the brazier burning nearby. Judah at this time is under pressure from larger empires, and royal policy and public messaging are politically charged. This scene presents a direct clash between the prophetic word (now fixed in writing) and royal power. The text’s explicit claims are concrete: the scroll is retrieved from a scribe’s chamber, read aloud in court, and then destroyed in stages as it is being read (Jer 36:20–23). The king’s response is not only rejection but public, physical defiance.
The narrator also signals what an “appropriate” response would have looked like by telling the reader what did not happen: no fear and no torn garments from the king or his servants, even though they heard “all these words” (Jer 36:24). Some officials plead with the king not to burn it, but he refuses (Jer 36:25). The king then tries to arrest Baruch and Jeremiah, but the attempt fails because “Yahweh hid them” (Jer 36:26).
Two smaller questions tend to draw different readings:
What “three or four leaves” means. Some take it as literal “pages” in a scroll (sections/columns), highlighting the repeated cycle: listen a little, then destroy. Others take it more generally as “a few portions,” emphasizing the pattern rather than the exact scroll mechanics.
What it means that “Yahweh hid them.” Some read this as direct divine concealment in an extraordinary way. Others read it as God’s providential protection through ordinary means (warnings, timing, safe locations), with the text summarizing the outcome as God’s action.
Why the disagreement exists The Hebrew scroll format and vocabulary allow more than one reasonable reconstruction of what was physically happening (“leaves”/sections). And the narrative statement “Yahweh hid them” is a theological explanation that does not specify how the hiding worked, leaving room for different accounts of the mechanism while agreeing on the claimed source.
What this passage clearly contributes This passage portrays hardened leadership: the king hears the message in full and responds with contempt rather than alarm. It also shows that suppressing the written word (burning the scroll) does not equal suppressing the message itself, because the prophet and scribe remain out of reach under Yahweh’s protection (Jer 36:26). The text frames the court’s reaction as morally significant: destruction of the scroll and lack of fear are presented as evidence of refusal to heed God’s warning, even when responsible officials urge restraint.
