Siege begins under Babylon’s king The narrative frames the event as Jerusalem being taken, then backs up to mark when the siege started: in Zedekiah’s ninth year, tenth month. Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon comes with “all his army” against Jerusalem and surrounds it, beginning a sustained blockade.
The city is breached A second date marks the decisive turning point: Zedekiah’s eleventh year, fourth month, ninth day. A “breach” is made in the city—its defenses are opened up, making entry possible. The two dates together communicate a long siege with a clear moment of collapse.

Literary Context
Jeremiah 39 shifts from warnings and negotiations earlier in the book to the narrated outcome: the city is captured. These verses function like a headline and timestamp before the story continues with what happens to the king, the people, and Jeremiah. The narration is spare and procedural—dates, actions, officials—so the reader can track the turning points: siege, breach, occupation. It also connects to other fall-of-Jerusalem accounts elsewhere in Scripture, but here the focus is simply establishing the basic facts and the change of control.
Historical Context
The passage is set at the end of Judah’s kingdom, during Zedekiah’s reign under Babylonian dominance. Nebuchadnezzar’s forces surround Jerusalem and maintain a long siege, a common ancient tactic to starve a fortified city into collapse. After the defenses are breached, Babylonian commanders move into a strategic gate area to control movement, issue orders, and signal that authority has transferred. The dated notes match an extended campaign rather than a single battle, reflecting both the city’s defenses and the empire’s capacity to sustain pressure.
Theological Significance
Jeremiah 39:1–3 presents Jerusalem’s fall as an orderly sequence with timestamps: the siege begins, the defenses are breached, and Babylon’s senior officials enter and take up a controlling position inside the city. The repeated dating by Zedekiah’s regnal years highlights duration and inevitability: this was sustained pressure, not a sudden skirmish.

The text also portrays the takeover as official. Naming high-ranking leaders and noting that “all” the princes came in supports the idea of a public transfer of authority, not an undirected mob action.
Two details raise interpretive questions without changing the basic storyline.
First, the opening wording (“when Jerusalem was taken”) can be read as a brief summary heading before the narrative steps are stated, or as simply the way the narrator introduces the whole account.
Second, the “middle gate” is not self-explained. Some take it as a known strategic gate area within Jerusalem (a control point after a breach). Others think the exact location is uncertain and should not be pressed beyond “a key gate where officials could oversee the city.”
A smaller question is whether the two mentions of “Nergal-sharezer” refer to the same man listed twice with different titles, or two different officials with the same name.
The passage is brief and assumes the reader knows Jerusalem’s gate layout and Babylonian official titles. Also, ancient lists sometimes repeat names or attach titles in ways that are hard to reconstruct with confidence from this short report alone.
Explicitly, it fixes the fall of Jerusalem in time (siege start; breach date) and describes the change of control in concrete actions: Babylon surrounds the city, breaks through, then establishes administrative presence at a gate. By stressing “all” the princes and their seated posture, it frames the conquest as organized occupation under the king of Babylon, not merely battlefield success. This “headline” also sets up what follows in the chapter: consequences for the king, the population, and Jeremiah (cf. Jeremiah 39:1).
