Historical Context

Some understand “carry away captive” to include seized idols and temple wealth (and possibly people in the same sweep). For “array himself,” some read it as plundering and displaying Egypt’s riches; others read it more generally as taking Egypt into his possession and control with ease.
Why the disagreement exists The images are vivid but flexible: “servant,” “pavilion,” “carry away captive,” and “put on like a garment” can point to overlapping realities (rule, plunder, and symbolic humiliation). Also, the passage refers to physical locations (the hidden stones; Beth-shemesh) without giving modern-identifiable detail, which leaves room for different reconstructions.
