Joy and production stop Joy is removed from Moab’s productive land. Winepress activity ceases: no one treads grapes, and the usual shouts connected with harvest no longer function as celebration. The verse turns a familiar communal sound into an absence, making the land feel emptied.
A countrywide cry and desolated waters A cry spreads across Moab from city to city, as if the whole map is filled with one continuing wail. Even natural resources fail: the waters of Nimrim become desolate, adding environmental and economic collapse to the human grief.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Jeremiah’s long set of messages about surrounding nations (Jeremiah 46–51), where Moab receives an extended oracle in chapter 48. The section immediately before (48:26–30) highlights Moab’s pride and its coming humiliation; this unit then shifts tone into lament, using mourning language and sound-images to make Moab’s devastation feel present. Afterward (48:40–47), the oracle continues with sweeping imagery of danger closing in, public disgrace, and eventual notes of future change. The logic here moves from grief, to concrete losses, to the divine cause, to the social outcome.
Historical Context
Moab lay east of the Dead Sea, with towns and agricultural zones tied to vineyards and trade routes. Jeremiah’s ministry overlaps the period when Babylon became the dominant power after Assyria’s decline, and smaller states in the region faced conquest, forced movement, and economic disruption. The named locations (e.g., Heshbon, Elealeh, Zoar) map grief across Moab’s territory, suggesting a national-scale catastrophe rather than a single battle. The references to wine, summer fruit, and water sources show how invasion meant more than political defeat—it threatened food, income, and the everyday stability of communities.

The passage also assigns the final cause to Yahweh: he removes harvest joy (v.33), stops Moab’s high-place worship and incense (v.35), and “breaks” Moab like a jar no one wants (v.38). These are explicit claims in the wording of the oracle.
Moab’s collapse is not only military or political; it reaches into economy (fruit and vintage ruined), environment (Nimrim’s waters desolate), religion (offerings stopped), and social standing (shame, ridicule, fear among neighbors; v.39).
Who is “I” in the lament? Some readers take the wailing voice mainly as Jeremiah’s own (a prophet grieving even over an enemy). Others think the “I” blends prophet and Yahweh within prophetic speech—especially because Yahweh speaks directly in vv.35 and 38.
What does “Yahweh will stop offerings” mean in practice? Some understand it chiefly as religious judgment (Yahweh ending false worship). Others stress that it describes what conquest does: invasion disrupts public life so thoroughly that regular worship at shrines cannot continue.
How complete is the “broken vessel” image? Some hear it as near-total ruin with no quick repair implied. Others view it as strong humiliation language that can still leave room for later reversal within the wider chapter.
The passage shifts rapidly between lament language and direct divine speech (“says Yahweh”), and it mixes emotional grief with statements of divine action. That makes it hard to separate narrator/prophet voice from God’s own voice. Also, the images (winepress silence, broken jar, stopped offerings) can describe both inner meaning (judgment on worship) and outward events (war’s disruption).
This unit presents judgment in a register of sorrow: national collapse is depicted as devastating and worth mourning, even when it is also portrayed as Yahweh’s doing. It ties Moab’s humiliation to the loss of joy, the end of economic abundance, and the shutting down of its religious system, resulting in shame and a new reputation among surrounding peoples. It also shows how prophetic speech can hold together grief and divine agency without treating them as opposites.
