11:5Meaning
Zophar wishes God would speak directly Zophar expresses a strong desire that God would speak and “open his lips against” Job. The point is not merely that God would talk, but that God would respond in a way that challenges Job’s position and counters Job’s claims.
Unit 2 (v. 6a): God’s speech would reveal hidden wisdom
Zophar says God would “show” Job the “secrets of wisdom.” He assumes there are realities about Job’s situation that are presently concealed and that only God can disclose.
Unit 3 (v. 6b–c): Wisdom is “double,” and Job is being treated less harshly than deserved
Zophar adds that “true wisdom has two sides,” suggesting wisdom is more complex than Job’s current reasoning. From that, he presses Job to “know” this conclusion: God is requiring from Job less than his wrongdoing deserves, implying Job’s suffering is not excessive but, if anything, restrained.
