Unit 1 (v. 14a): A response demanded by the moment
Joshua begins with “now therefore,” linking the command to what has just been rehearsed about Yahweh’s past actions. The first instruction is to “fear Yahweh,” meaning to treat him with serious reverence rather than casual familiarity.
Unit 2 (v. 14b): Exclusive, whole-hearted service
Israel is told to serve Yahweh “in sincerity and in truth,” pointing to integrity (not a split or staged loyalty). Joshua then names what blocks that integrity: keeping other gods. He orders them to put those gods away and repeats the central demand: serve Yahweh.
Unit 3 (v. 15a): The forced-choice framing
Joshua anticipates resistance: if serving Yahweh “seems evil” to them, they should openly choose another master. He lists the live alternatives—ancestral gods from beyond the River, or the gods honored by the peoples of the land (called “Amorites”)—so the decision is not vague but specific.
Unit 4 (v. 15b): Joshua’s household commitment
Joshua closes by declaring his own settled choice: he and his household will serve Yahweh. His statement functions as both example and boundary marker—he will not join a mixed arrangement even if others do.
