From eastern battles to possession God says he brought Israel into Amorite land beyond the Jordan. The Amorites fought Israel, but God “gave them into your hand,” resulting in Israel taking their land. The outcome is described as God removing them as an obstacle.
Moab’s hostility and Balaam’s failed curse Balak, king of Moab, is portrayed as acting against Israel by summoning Balaam to curse them. God says he refused to listen to Balaam; instead of a curse, Balaam ended up blessing Israel. The result is framed as rescue from Balak’s attempt.

Literary Context
These verses sit inside Joshua’s closing covenant-setting speech at Shechem, where Joshua recites a long remembered story in God’s voice. The speech aims to show a steady pattern: God initiates, leads, protects, and provides, while Israel benefits and is then called to respond. The section immediately preceding (24:1–7) has already traced earlier stages of the story, and 24:14–28 will press Israel to choose whom to serve and to commit themselves. The logic here is cumulative: past actions build a case for present loyalty.
Historical Context
The events summarized span Israel’s approach to Canaan and early settlement. “Beyond the Jordan” points to the eastern side where Israel encountered Amorite kingdoms before crossing westward. Moab lies southeast of the Dead Sea; Balak’s move against Israel and his hiring of Balaam recall a political attempt to weaken an incoming people without direct battle. Jericho represents the first major entry point in the central hill country region. The list of peoples reflects Canaan as a patchwork of local groups and city-kingdoms rather than one unified state.
Theological Significance

How “fought against Israel” in v. 9 relates to Balaam. Some readers think v. 9 implies Balak mounted an actual military attack, and the Balaam episode is additional hostility. Others read “fought” more broadly as “acted as an enemy,” with the hiring of Balaam functioning as the main expression of that hostility.
What “the hornet” in v. 12 refers to. Some take it as literal insects used to disrupt enemy forces. Others take it as a figure for panic, confusion, or another agent God used to drive opponents out.
The wording allows more than one natural reading. “Fought” can describe armed battle or aggressive opposition more generally. “Hornet” can be read literally or as vivid battle-language. Also, the passage compresses several events into a short summary, so it does not spell out details like sequence, mechanisms, or which specific “two kings” are meant.
Explicitly, the text claims God was the decisive cause behind Israel’s victories and settlement: God brought Israel in (v. 8), overruled cursing into blessing (vv. 9–10), delivered multiple opponents into Israel’s “hand” (vv. 8, 11), and drove out enemies “not with your sword, nor with your bow” (v. 12). The closing picture (v. 13) emphasizes unearned provision—land, cities, vineyards, and olive groves received rather than produced.
As a theological inference, the passage supports the covenant-speech logic of Joshua 24: past divine reliability is presented as the basis for the covenant claim that follows in the next section (24:14–28). It also presents God’s rule as extending over nations, battle outcomes, and even prophetic speech (Balaam), without detailing exactly how every means worked.
