Joshua responds to Israel’s confident promise with a warning: loyalty to Yahweh is not casual. The text explicitly grounds the warning in Yahweh’s character—“holy” and “jealous”—and in the seriousness of rebellion and sin (v.19). Joshua also explicitly describes the outcome of switching loyalties: if they forsake Yahweh for foreign gods, disaster follows, even after Yahweh has done them good (v.20).

Just as clear is the public nature of the commitment. The people restate their choice (“We will serve Yahweh,” v.21). Joshua turns their own words into testimony: they are “witnesses against” themselves that they chose Yahweh (v.22). He then calls for a concrete response: foreign gods must be put away, and the people’s “heart” must be directed toward Yahweh (v.23). They respond by reaffirming service and “listening” to Yahweh’s voice (v.24; compare Exodus 20:3).

Where interpretation differs

Two phrases raise real questions.

First, “You can’t serve Yahweh” (v.19). Some read this as absolute: Israel is unable to serve Yahweh rightly because Yahweh’s holiness exposes their likely unfaithfulness. Others read it as a rhetorical shock meant to slow them down: they “can’t” serve Yahweh in a casual, half-committed way.

Second, “He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins” (v.19). Some take this as stating that covenant betrayal will not be brushed aside; forgiveness is not automatic. Others think it is situational, not a blanket claim that Yahweh never forgives—rather, it underlines that turning to other gods brings severe consequences.

Why the disagreement exists The passage uses forceful, warning-style speech and then immediately records the people’s reaffirmed commitment (vv.21–24). That combination—sharp warning plus continued covenant-making—makes it hard to tell whether Joshua is stating an impossibility or pressing for seriousness. Also, the wording about not forgiving can be read either as “no easy pardon” or as “no forgiveness in this specific pattern of rebellion,” and the immediate context emphasizes the danger of divided loyalty.

What this passage clearly contributes This scene highlights the moral weight of covenant loyalty: Yahweh’s holiness and jealousy mean exclusive worship is expected, and betrayal is not treated lightly. It also shows how Israel’s commitment is made public and accountable—spoken pledges become self-incriminating testimony (“witnesses against yourselves”). Finally, Joshua treats loyalty as more than words: it includes removing rival allegiances (“foreign gods among you”) and re-aiming the “heart,” a summary of inner direction and settled intention, toward Yahweh (v.23).
