Written record and public memorial Joshua writes “these words” into “the book of the law of God,” presenting the commitment as something preserved alongside Israel’s recognized sacred instruction. He then takes a large stone and sets it up under an oak near the sanctuary of Yahweh, making a visible, durable marker where people would know to look.
The stone as a witness and warning Joshua addresses all the people and assigns the stone a witness role: it “has heard” the words spoken, so it stands against later denial. The point is not that the stone is a person, but that the memorial fixes the event in public memory. The warning is practical and moral: the witness stands “lest you deny your God,” so future unfaithfulness will be met with an established reminder of what they agreed to.
Literary Context
These verses conclude the book’s final assembly scene, where Joshua has gathered Israel and led them through a choice-and-commitment moment after reviewing Yahweh’s past actions on their behalf earlier in the chapter. The logic moves from spoken decision to durable memorial: what the people have just affirmed is not left as a private feeling or temporary promise but is fixed in writing and marked in the landscape. The ending also functions as a transition back to ordinary life: the gathered nation disperses, carrying the weight of the public commitment into their separate inheritances.
Historical Context
Shechem was a well-known central location in the hill country, suited for a major communal gathering and for setting up a visible memorial. In the ancient Near East, covenant commitments were commonly reinforced with written records and physical markers so later generations could point to something concrete when questions arose. Sacred sites often had identifiable trees, stones, and meeting areas associated with worship and public decisions. The passage reflects a society organized by tribal and family land allotments, so sending everyone back “to his inheritance” signals a return from national assembly to local responsibility.

Dismissal to inherited lands With the covenant set, recorded, and marked, Joshua ends the assembly by sending the people away. Each person returns to his inheritance, implying that the renewed commitment is now to be lived out within everyday family and land responsibilities.
Joshua 24:25–28 presents a public commitment being made durable. The text explicitly says Joshua “made a covenant” with the people at Shechem, set a “statute and an ordinance,” wrote “these words” in “the book of the law of God,” and erected a large stone by Yahweh’s sanctuary as a witness (vv. 25–27). The scene ends with the assembly dispersing back to each person’s inherited land (v. 28).
A clear emphasis is that Israel’s stated loyalty is not left as a one-time speech. It is preserved in writing and marked by a physical memorial so later denial cannot easily rewrite what happened.
Two main questions create some real (but limited) disagreement.
What “these words” includes (v. 26). Some read it narrowly: Joshua recorded the key covenant commitments and warnings just spoken. Others read it more broadly: it could include a larger portion of Joshua’s address in chapter 24.
What “the book of the law of God” means (v. 26). Some think it refers to an already recognized sacred collection that Joshua adds to. Others think it could be a more general way of saying “an official sacred record” without specifying how it relates to earlier written material.
The passage does not list the exact wording written down, and it assumes the audience understands what “the book of the law of God” refers to. Also, Joshua speaks of the stone as if it “heard” the words (v. 27), which is clearly figurative in one sense, but still draws on a formal way of presenting witnesses in public agreements.
