A praised teacher, a serious question, and a confident self-assessment A ruler addresses Jesus as “Good Teacher” and asks what he should do to inherit eternal life. Jesus first challenges the way “good” is being applied, insisting that only God is truly good. He then points the ruler to known commandments focused on key neighbor-relationships. The ruler replies that he has kept these from youth, presenting himself as morally consistent over time.
One remaining lack and the exposure of attachment Jesus says one thing is still missing: sell all possessions, give to the poor, gain “treasure in heaven,” and then come follow him. The offer combines a radical release of wealth, concrete care for the poor, and personal attachment to Jesus. Literary Context
This scene comes in Luke’s long travel section toward Jerusalem, where Jesus repeatedly teaches about status, possessions, and dependence on God. Just before it, Jesus welcomes little children and says God’s kingdom is received like a child, not achieved by rank or self-confidence. The ruler’s question tests that theme: he has position and claims moral success, yet struggles to let go. After the encounter, Jesus turns from the individual case to a broader saying about wealth and then answers the crowd’s and Peter’s reactions, widening the lesson to discipleship and its costs and rewards.
Historical Context
A “ruler” likely signals a local leader with social standing, and “very rich” implies notable economic power in a world where most lived near subsistence. Wealth often meant land, assets, and networks of obligation, and giving it away would disrupt family security and honor. The commandments Jesus lists would have been widely known markers of public integrity. Calling a teacher “good” functioned as high praise in an honor-focused culture. “Treasure in heaven” reflects common Jewish language for lasting reward, and “follow me” echoes the visible, costly practice of becoming a traveling disciple in that period.

The disciples’ loss and Jesus’ promise of return Peter points out that the disciples have left their own lives behind to follow Jesus. Jesus answers with a broad promise: anyone who has left close ties and security—home and family relationships—for the sake of God’s kingdom will receive many times more “in this time,” and in the coming age, eternal life. The statement frames loss as real, but not final, and places both present and future outcomes in view.
This scene puts a serious question on the table: how someone “inherits eternal life” and enters “the kingdom of God.” The ruler asks in “what do I do” terms, and Jesus engages him first with God’s goodness and then with well-known commandments about life with neighbors.
The turning point is Jesus’ diagnosis that “one thing” is missing. The issue is not that the commandments are irrelevant, but that the man’s wealth has a controlling grip. His sadness functions as evidence: he cannot let go.
Jesus then moves from one man to a broad warning: riches make entry into God’s kingdom very hard. The “camel” image is meant to underline difficulty, not to soften it. The listeners’ question (“who can be saved?”) treats “entering the kingdom” and “being saved” as closely linked here.
Finally, Jesus frames salvation as beyond human ability (“impossible with men”) yet within God’s ability (“possible with God”), and he ties costly following to promised return—both “in this time” and “in the world to come.”
1) Why Jesus challenges “Good Teacher.” Some read Jesus as correcting sloppy flattery and redirecting attention to God as the true standard of goodness. Others think Jesus is also pressing the ruler to face what his own words imply about Jesus’ identity and authority.
2) Whether “sell all” is universal or targeted. Some conclude Jesus’ command describes the normal requirement for all who would follow him: full surrender that may include full liquidation of assets. Others think it is a tailored demand that exposes this ruler’s particular obstacle—wealth—and that the general requirement is to put anything secondary to following Jesus.
3) What “treasure in heaven” and “many times more in this time” mean. Many agree it includes future reward (“in the world to come, eternal life”). The debate is what the “in this time” return refers to: new community and provision among Jesus’ people, restored life under God’s reign, or also material outcomes in some form.
The passage combines a concrete, individualized command (“sell all that you have”) with generalized sayings (“how hard it is for those who have riches”). It also links visible action (selling, giving, following) with God’s decisive action (“possible with God”), leaving interpreters to weigh how these fit together.
