This passage presents Jesus as fully aware of what awaits him in Jerusalem and as interpreting those events as the intended outcome of Israel’s prophetic Scriptures. That link to “what is written through the prophets” is an explicit claim in the text, even though Luke does not specify which prophetic passages are in view.

The sequence Jesus predicts is concrete: he will be handed over to non-Jewish authorities, publicly degraded (mocking, shameful treatment, spitting), physically abused (scourging), killed, and then raised “on the third day.” Luke also makes an explicit point about the disciples: at that moment they do not understand any of it, and the meaning remains inaccessible to them.

Where interpretation differs

What “completed” means. Some read Jesus’ wording as mainly about prophetic predictions coming true in detail (events matching what was written). Others read it more broadly: the prophets pointed to a whole mission that reaches its intended goal in Jerusalem—suffering, death, and vindication together.

Who the “Gentiles” are in the handover. Some take “delivered up to the Gentiles” to mean that Jewish leaders initiate the process but the decisive abuse and execution occur under Roman (non-Jewish) authority. Others hear “delivered up” more generally as Jesus being placed into the control of the non-Jewish ruling system, without specifying how responsibility is shared.

What “hidden from them” implies. Some think Luke is saying God withheld understanding for a time. Others think Luke is describing the disciples’ inability to process a suffering-and-rising Messiah, so the message functions as “hidden” because of their categories and expectations.

Whether “third day” is literal or idiomatic. Some read it as a straightforward time reference. Others note that it can function as a set phrase meaning “soon after,” while still pointing to real resurrection vindication.

Why the disagreement exists Luke gives strong statements but few details: he names “the prophets” without listing texts, he mentions “Gentiles” without narrating the mechanics here, and he states both “they understood none” and “it was hidden” without explaining the cause. The passage is also a preview, so later narrative scenes supply pieces readers use to fill in what these lines mean.

What this passage clearly contributes The text anchors Jesus’ suffering and death inside a purposeful story line tied to Scripture, not as an accident or surprise. It also places humiliation and bodily violence at the center of what “going up to Jerusalem” entails for the Son of Man. Finally, it highlights a major theme in Luke: Jesus can speak plainly about his destiny while his closest followers remain unable to grasp it until later events bring clarity.
