This scene follows Jesus’ prayer and warning in the garden, where he tells the disciples to stay alert as pressure approaches. It continues the movement from teaching and table conversation into public action as Jesus is taken into custody. Luke places three quick exchanges side by side: Jesus with Judas, the disciples with Jesus, and Jesus with the arresting authorities. The logic moves from identification (the kiss), to escalation (a sword strike), to de-escalation and interpretation (Jesus’ healing and his explanation of what this arrest represents).

The setting is Jerusalem during a festival season when crowds are high and leaders are anxious about unrest. Temple leadership had its own security force, and arrests could involve temple officers alongside other local authorities. Swords and clubs suggest readiness for resistance, as if expecting a violent suspect or a riot. A kiss could function as a customary greeting but also as a prearranged signal in low light. The “high priest’s servant” points to the involvement of the high priestly household and its influence in coordinating an arrest away from public teaching spaces.

Luke presents Jesus’ arrest as a coordinated move led by an insider. Judas (one of the twelve) uses a kiss to identify Jesus, and Jesus openly names this as betrayal of the “Son of Man.” The scene also shows two immediate responses to threat: the disciples consider armed resistance, and one of them acts violently. Jesus stops the escalation, heals the injured man, and then interprets the arresting party’s behavior as both cowardly (they avoided arresting him publicly in the ) and spiritually charged (“your hour… the power of darkness”).
