1:14Meaning
Transition and setting After John is taken into custody, Jesus goes into Galilee and begins publicly announcing good news about God’s kingdom. The timing note links Jesus’ start with John’s removal, and the location note anchors the opening phase of Jesus’ work in a specific region.
Unit 2 (v. 15a): Two declarations
Jesus’ spoken message begins with two claims: “The time is fulfilled” and “the kingdom of God is at hand.” The first frames the moment as reaching a planned or expected point; the second says God’s reign is near, close enough to demand attention now.
Unit 3 (v. 15b): Two responses
Because the moment is urgent, Jesus calls for two actions: “Repent” and “believe in the gospel.” Repentance is presented as a turning response to what is happening, and believing is directed specifically toward the announced good news (gospel), not toward a vague optimism.
