Judah’s sons and Tamar
The line continues through Judah, naming Perez and Zerah, and it specifies that their mother was Tamar. From Perez the genealogy advances to Hezron and then to Ram, keeping the descent moving while spotlighting this particular birth story.
Unit 3 (vv. 4–5a): From Ram to Salmon
A steady sequence follows: Ram to Amminadab, Amminadab to Nahshon, Nahshon to Salmon. The passage does not explain these figures here; it uses them as connecting links between earlier patriarchal origins and later, better-known characters.
Unit 4 (vv. 5b–6): Named mothers and the arrival at David
Salmon is said to have Boaz “by Rahab,” and Boaz is said to have Obed “by Ruth,” again marking mothers and suggesting remembered stories behind the names. Obed leads to Jesse, and Jesse to “David the king.” David’s next son is Solomon, and Matthew notes Solomon’s mother indirectly as “her who had been the wife of Uriah,” emphasizing the prior marriage rather than naming her.
