Temple versus its gold Jesus announces a “woe” and calls them blind guides because they teach that swearing by the temple is “nothing,” but swearing by the temple’s gold makes someone obligated (“a debtor”). He counters with a simple comparison: the temple is greater than the gold because the temple is what makes the gold treated as holy and weighty.
Altar versus the gift on it He repeats the same pattern: they say an oath “by the altar” counts for nothing, but an oath “by the gift” on the altar binds the speaker. Jesus flips their value scale again: the altar is greater than the gift because the altar is what gives the gift its special status.
What an altar-oath really includes Jesus draws an implication: anyone who swears by the altar is not limiting the oath to the altar alone; the oath also extends to “everything on it.” Their attempt to isolate what counts and what doesn’t ignores how the objects are connected.
Literary Context
This unit sits inside Jesus’ public critique of the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23, where repeated “woe” sayings expose how their leadership harms others. Just before this, Jesus targets their focus on public honor and titles, contrasting their posture with humble service (23:1–12). Just after, he condemns their selective rule-keeping that misses “weightier” matters and their concern for outward cleanliness while inner motives remain corrupt (23:23–28). The oath discussion fits the wider pattern: they manage religion by surface distinctions that sound careful but end up misleading.
Historical Context
In first-century Judea under Roman rule, the Jerusalem temple was the central place for worship, offerings, and public religious life. People used oaths in everyday disputes and promises, and teachers debated what made an oath binding. One common strategy was to avoid directly naming God while still sounding serious, by invoking sacred things connected to the temple. Jesus addresses that kind of oath logic in a setting where religious leaders shaped public practice and where the temple’s objects—gold, offerings, altar—carried recognized social and religious weight.
Theological Significance
Jesus is correcting a way of teaching about oaths that sounded careful but actually misled people. The leaders draw fine lines: an oath “by the temple” or “by the altar” is treated as not binding, but an oath “by the gold” or “by the gift” is treated as binding. Jesus calls this guidance “blind” because it reverses what is actually greater (temple over gold; altar over gift) and because it tries to limit accountability by word games.

Temple and heaven-oaths reach to God He expands the same logic upward. Swearing by the temple includes swearing by the one who lives in it. Swearing by heaven includes swearing by God’s throne and by the one seated on it. The point is that oaths that invoke sacred realities inevitably involve God, even when God’s name is avoided.
The passage assumes that the temple and altar have meaning because of their connection to God. Jesus’ reasoning is that the larger sacred reality is what gives the smaller item its weight, so you cannot treat the smaller item as more serious than the source of its sacred status.
Two main questions get debated.
First, what does “it is nothing” mean in their teaching (vv. 16, 18)? Some read it as “invalid / not really an oath at all.” Others read it as “a real oath, but they claim it doesn’t obligate you.” Either way, Jesus’ critique stands: their system is designed to create a loophole.
Second, who is “him who is living in it” (v. 21)? Many take it as God’s presence associated with the temple. A smaller number argue it could be a more general reference to the one whose name and presence the temple represents. Verse 22 (“throne of God… him who sits on it”) strongly pulls the meaning toward God.
Why the disagreement exists The passage reports the leaders’ exact phrases but does not stop to define them, so readers infer what “nothing” and “debtor” are meant to imply (social expectation, moral obligation, or enforceable liability). Also, the temple language can be read as direct talk about God’s dwelling or as a reverent way of speaking about God without defining the details.
What this passage clearly contributes It explicitly teaches that oath formulas cannot be compartmentalized: swearing “by” something sacred reaches beyond the object to what it represents and depends on. Jesus also explicitly reorders value: the temple is greater than its gold, and the altar is greater than the gift, because they “sanctify” (set apart) what is associated with them. Theologically, the passage reinforces that speech about sacred things is not religious decoration; it carries real accountability before God (vv. 21–22).
