Psalm 1:2 describes the “blessed” person by turning from what they avoid (v.1) to what they positively want. The explicit claim is that their pleasure is centered on “the law of Yahweh,” and that this inner desire expresses itself in an ongoing pattern: they “meditate” on that instruction “day and night.” The contrast (“But”) implies an alternative center of attention, but the verse highlights the positive focus rather than listing every rival influence.

The verse presents an inside-out connection: delight and repeated reflection match each other. The point is not merely exposure to Yahweh’s instruction but sustained engagement with it.

Where interpretation differs

Two main questions arise from the wording.

First, what “law” means here. Some read it primarily as the Torah in a more focused sense (the core covenant instruction given to Israel). Others take it more broadly as Yahweh’s teaching in general—his revealed guidance for life as preserved and taught in Israel’s worshiping community.

Second, what “meditates” means in practice. Some understand it mainly as quiet, thoughtful reflection. Others emphasize that the verb can include murmuring or reciting under one’s breath, closer to repeated verbal rehearsal.

Why the disagreement exists

Both differences come from the range of meaning in the Hebrew terms and from how ancient learning often worked. “Law” can name a specific collection (Torah) or Yahweh’s instruction more generally, and “meditate” can describe either inward reflection or spoken rehearsal. Also, “day and night” can be taken as a figure of speech for regularity rather than literal nonstop activity.

What this passage clearly contributes

This verse explicitly links flourishing (“blessed”) with an inner attachment to Yahweh’s instruction and an ongoing habit of bringing that instruction to mind. It portrays Yahweh’s teaching as something meant to shape the whole rhythm of life (“day and night”), not an occasional reference point. It also clarifies that Psalm 1’s two-way contrast is not only about external associations and actions (v.1) but about what a person most enjoys and returns to.
