Shared ground

Psalm 100:3 ties worship to recognition. The verse’s explicit claim is that the gathered community should know (settle on, acknowledge) that Yahweh is truly God (Yahweh; God). It then gives a reason that grounds their identity: Yahweh made them, and therefore they belong to him.

The verse restates that belonging with two communal images: “his people” and “the sheep of his pasture.” These images do more than say “owned”; they portray a relationship of care, provision, and guidance.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

1) A wording question: Some translations read, “It is he who made us, and not we ourselves,” while others read, “It is he who made us, and we are his.” In practice, both fit the verse’s overall logic: God is the maker; the people are not self-made; they are his.

2) Who is included in “us”: The speakers are a worshiping community using “we/us.” Some readers take this as Israel in its gathered worship. Others think the claim also naturally extends to humanity more broadly because the reason given (God as creator) is universal.

Why the disagreement exists The differences come from (a) an old textual variation in the middle line and (b) the psalm’s corporate voice: it clearly speaks as a particular gathered people, while also using creation language that can be heard in a wider sense.

What this passage clearly contributes

• Knowledge of God here is not abstract. It is recognition of Yahweh’s identity that explains why worship is fitting.
• The passage explicitly links creation (“he made us”) to belonging (“we are his”).
• The “people / sheep in his pasture” language frames belonging as relational and pastoral, not merely possessive.
• The verse presents a communal identity: the worshipers speak together, as one people under God’s care.
