Psalm 112:1 opens with a public worship cry (“Praise Yah!”) and then speaks like wisdom teaching: it announces a “blessed” life and identifies the kind of person in view. Explicitly, the blessed person is described by two linked traits: (1) they “fear” Yahweh (a posture of reverent seriousness toward God), and (2) they “delight greatly” in Yahweh’s commandments. The verse presents these not as separate options but as belonging together.

The verse also assumes that Yahweh’s commandments are knowable and worth valuing, and that attitudes toward God and toward God’s instruction are central markers of a life that can be called “blessed” (Psalm 112:1).

Who is “the man/person”? Some read “the man” as a representative figure (a portrait of the God-fearer in general), while others lean toward a more individualized description (a single person held up as an example). In either case, the verse functions as a general statement meant to be reused.

What does “fear” mean here? Many understand “fear” mainly as reverence and awe that takes God seriously; others think the word keeps some sense of dread or trembling before God’s holiness. Most readings agree it is not describing panic, but a stance that shapes loyalty and conduct.

What does “blessed” mean? Some take “blessed” primarily as inner well-being and an enviable life orientation; others emphasize visible outcomes and favor that can be observed over time (as the rest of the psalm will go on to describe). The verse itself does not specify which aspects are most prominent.

Why the disagreement exists

The key terms are compact and broad. “Blessed,” “fear,” and “commandments” each cover a range of meaning, and the verse is an opening line that introduces themes the rest of the psalm develops. Also, Hebrew “man” can be used for an individual or as a generic representative.

What this passage clearly contributes

• Worship (“Praise Yah!”) and moral formation belong together here: praise introduces instruction about the good life.
• “Blessed” is explicitly attached to a relationship with Yahweh, not merely to circumstances.
• The text links reverence for Yahweh with a positive, even joyful attachment to Yahweh’s commandments; obedience is portrayed as welcomed rather than merely endured.
