Literary Context
Psalm 122 is a “song of ascents,” oriented around going up to Jerusalem for worship. Earlier lines celebrate arriving at the city, the unity of the tribes, and Jerusalem as a place where justice is administered. Verses 6–7 shift from describing Jerusalem to addressing the listeners: they are asked to pray, and to speak a blessing over the city’s internal life. The repeated pairing of “peace” and “prosperity” pushes the reader to imagine not only the absence of conflict but a stable, flourishing city life that matches Jerusalem’s central role in communal gatherings.
