Literary Context
Psalm 129 is a short communal song that remembers repeated hostility against Israel and yet insists the people have not been finally overcome. The psalm begins with a shared memory of long-term affliction, then moves into vivid imagery of enemies trying to “plow” the people’s backs. Verse 4 marks a turning point: instead of describing what enemies did, it announces what Yahweh has done. After this, the psalm continues by asking that those who hate Zion be put to shame and fade away, extending the confidence of verse 4 into spoken hopes about the enemies’ future.
