Literary Context
Psalm 131 is a short “Song of Ascents” (Psalms 120–134), likely used by worshipers traveling up to Jerusalem. The psalm moves from rejecting proud ambition (v.1) to describing a practiced inner posture of calm (v.2), and then to urging Israel to adopt a similar settled hope (v.3). Verse 2 is the emotional center: it explains what the humility of verse 1 looks like on the inside. The repeated child image functions like a refrain, pressing the reader to linger on the picture.
