Literary Context
Psalm 131 is a short psalm of trust and humility, voiced as direct prayer to Yahweh. Verse 1 sets the tone by describing what the speaker is not doing: he is not driven by pride, not projecting superiority, and not preoccupied with matters beyond him. In the psalm’s larger movement (vv. 2–3), this humility is paired with calmness and communal encouragement, so the opening denial of pride functions like a doorway into a quiet, steady posture before God rather than a claim to personal greatness.
