Psalm 17:15 ends the prayer by contrasting the speaker’s “portion” with that of his violent opponents (vv. 13–14). The speaker expects access to God (“I shall see your face”) and describes that access as the deepest satisfaction (“I shall be satisfied”). The text’s hope is not framed as getting more goods, but as God’s presence becoming real and perceptible (“seeing your form”).

The verse also connects this hoped-for encounter with “righteousness” (righteousness). Explicitly, righteousness is linked to seeing God’s face; the text does not stop to explain the mechanics, but it treats the connection as fitting and reliable.

Where interpretation differs

Two main questions draw different readings:

1. What “in righteousness” modifies. Some read it mainly as the speaker’s integrity in approaching God: he can expect access because he has pursued a right path throughout the psalm (see vv. 1–5). Others read it mainly as God’s righteous action: God, as the just judge, will rightly grant the speaker vindication and access.

2. What “when I awake” refers to. Some take it as waking from sleep into a new day when God’s help becomes visible. Others think the language reaches beyond ordinary mornings to a final waking after death, so that “seeing your form” points to a post-death encounter with God.

Why the disagreement exists

The Hebrew wording is compact and can attach phrases in more than one direction. “In righteousness” can naturally describe either a person’s approach or God’s manner of acting. Likewise, “awake” can be used for normal waking, but in poetry it can also describe a decisive transition from distress to life or renewal. Psalm 17 itself emphasizes both the speaker’s integrity and God’s judging righteousness, and the immediate context contrasts “this life” for the opponents with the speaker’s different hope.

What this passage clearly contributes

The verse presents God’s presence as the speaker’s ultimate good: he expects to “see” God’s face and be “satisfied” by God himself, not by the kinds of securities his enemies enjoy. It also places that hope in a future moment (“when I awake”), meaning the speaker’s confidence looks beyond the current crisis. Finally, it ties this hoped-for access to righteousness, reinforcing the psalm’s larger theme that the dispute is not only about safety but about rightness—God’s just order and the speaker’s claim to integrity.
