Psalm 55 is a complaint-prayer that moves between describing pressure, betrayal, and danger, and choosing to entrust the outcome to God. Earlier in the psalm the speaker asks God to listen, describes violence and ruin in the city, and mourns the pain of being betrayed by a close companion (vv. 1–15). Verses 16–19 function as a turning point: instead of only reporting distress, the speaker states what he will do (“I will call”) and what God will do (“he will hear,” “he has redeemed,” “will answer”). The section then leads into stronger statements about God’s action and the speaker’s trust (vv. 20–23).
