God directs history toward his purposes while holding people responsible for their choices; he can work through human actions without endorsing their sin.
12When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, No, but a king shall reign over us; when Yahweh your God was your king.
13Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have asked for: and, behold, Yahweh has set a king over you.
14If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, and both you and also the king who reigns over you be followers of Yahweh your God, [well]:
15but if you will not listen to the voice of Yahweh, but rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then will the hand of Yahweh be against you, as it was against your fathers.
13Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you: for now would Yahweh have established your kingdom on Israel forever.
14But now your kingdom shall not continue: Yahweh has sought him a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.
15Samuel arose, and got him up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.
27There came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, Thus says Yahweh, Did I reveal myself to the house of your father, when they were in Egypt [in bondage] to Pharaoh`s house?
28and did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?
29Why kick you at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in [my] habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?
30Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever: but now Yahweh says, Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
31Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father`s house, that there shall not be an old man in your house.
32You shall see the affliction of [my] habitation, in all the wealth which [God] shall give Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house forever.
33The man of yours, [whom] I shall not cut off from my altar, [shall be] to consume your eyes, and to grieve your heart; and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age.
34This shall be the sign to you, that shall come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die both of them.
35I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever.
36It shall happen, that everyone who is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, Please put me into one of the priests` offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.
6Yahweh kills, and makes alive: He brings down to Sheol, and brings up.
7Yahweh makes poor, and makes rich: He brings low, he also lifts up.
8He raises up the poor out of the dust, He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, Inherit the throne of glory: For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh`s, He has set the world on them.
7Yahweh said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.
8According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you.
9Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the manner of the king who shall reign over them.
15Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,
16Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked on my people, because their cry is come to me.
17When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! this same shall have authority over my people.
2Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said to them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover of this sickness.
3But the angel of Yahweh said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, Is it because there is no God in Israel, that you go to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?
4Now therefore thus says Yahweh, You shall not come down from the bed where you are gone up, but shall surely die. Elijah departed.
9So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days` journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the animals that followed them.
10The king of Israel said, Alas! for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
11But Jehoshaphat said, Isn`t there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him? One of the king of Israel`s servants answered, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12Jehoshaphat said, The word of Yahweh is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13Elisha said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with you? get you to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother. The king of Israel said to him, No; for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14Elisha said, As Yahweh of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.
15But now bring me a minstrel. It happened, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Yahweh came on him.
16He said, Thus says Yahweh, Make this valley full of trenches.
17For thus says Yahweh, You shall not see wind, neither shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you shall drink, both you and your cattle and your animals.
18This is but a light thing in the sight of Yahweh: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
19You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
20It happened in the morning, about the time of offering the offering, that behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
8Now the king of Syria was warring against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.
9The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that you not pass such a place; for there the Syrians are coming down.
10The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once nor twice.
11The heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Won`t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?
12One of his servants said, No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedchamber.
6For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come on us.
7Therefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their donkeys, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.
10Elisha said to him, Go, tell him, You shall surely recover; however Yahweh has showed me that he shall surely die.
11He settled his gaze steadfastly [on him], until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.
12Hazael said, Why weeps my lord? He answered, Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: their strongholds will you set on fire, and their young men will you kill with the sword, and will dash in pieces their little ones, and rip up their women with child.
13Hazael said, But what is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing? Elisha answered, Yahweh has showed me that you shall be king over Syria.
14Then he departed from Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha to you? He answered, He told me that you would surely recover.
15It happened on the next day, that he took the coverlet, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his place.
14David said to him, How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy Yahweh`s anointed?
15David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall on him. He struck him, so that he died.
16David said to him, Your blood be on your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying, I have slain Yahweh`s anointed.
27When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.
13David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh." Nathan said to David, "Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.
14However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh`s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die."
15Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah`s wife bore to David, and it was very sick.
7Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: `I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.
8I gave you your master`s house, and your master`s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.
9Why have you despised the word of Yahweh, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
10Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.`
11This is what Yahweh says: `Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.
12For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.`"
10David grew greater and greater; for Yahweh, the God of hosts, was with him.
19David inquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? will you deliver them into my hand? Yahweh said to David, Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand.
8Now therefore thus shall you tell my servant David, Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people, over Israel;
9and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.
10I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,
11and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.
12When your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
13He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;
15but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.
16Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before you: your throne shall be established forever.
6Now it happened on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, that Satan also came among them.
7Yahweh said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
8Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil."
9Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing?
10Haven`t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face."
12Yahweh said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don`t put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of Yahweh.
13"With God is wisdom and might. He has counsel and understanding.
14Behold, he breaks down, and it can`t be built again; He imprisons a man, and there can be no release.
15Behold, he withholds the waters, and they dry up; Again, he sends them out, and they overturn the earth.
16With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.
17He leads counselors away stripped. He makes judges fools.
18He loosens the bond of kings, He binds their loins with a belt.
19He leads priests away stripped, And overthrows the mighty.
20He removes the speech of those who are trusted, And takes away the understanding of the elders.
21He pours contempt on princes, And loosens the belt of the strong.
22He uncovers deep things out of darkness, And brings out to light the shadow of death.
23He increases the nations, and he destroys them. He enlarges the nations, and he leads them captive.
24He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth, And causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
25They grope in the dark without light. He makes them stagger like a drunken man.
15Behold, he will kill me; I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.
16This also shall be my salvation, That a godless man shall not come before him.
10But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job didn`t sin with his lips.
1Again it happened on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, that Satan came also among them to present himself before Yahweh.
2Yahweh said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."
3Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause."
4Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has will he give for his life.
5But put forth your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce you to your face."
6Yahweh said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life."
4God who is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: Who has hardened himself against him, and prospered?
5Who removes the mountains, and they don`t know it, When he overturns them in his anger
6Who shakes the earth out of its place; The pillars of it tremble;
7Who commands the sun, and it doesn`t rise, And seals up the stars;
8Who alone stretches out the heavens, Treads on the waves of the sea;
9Who makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, And the chambers of the south;
10Who does great things past finding out, Yes, marvelous things without number.
11Behold, he goes by me, and I don`t see him. He passes on also, but I don`t perceive him.
12Behold, he snatches away; who can hinder him? Who will ask him, `What are you doing?`
13"God will not withdraw his anger; The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
