This section continues a longer call to honorable public conduct among surrounding society (from 2:11 onward), especially when misunderstood or mistreated. Just before this, the letter urges unity, empathy, and returning blessing for insult, grounding the tone in a pursuit of peace and good (3:8–12). Now the focus narrows to the realistic case where doing good still draws hostility. The logic moves from a general expectation (good typically prevents harm) to an exception (suffering may still occur), and then to the proper response: calm courage, clear speech, and consistent behavior.
