John emphasizes public testimony—John the Baptist, Jesus’ works, the Father’s voice, Scripture, and the disciples’ eyewitness—to establish truth in the open. Competing testimonies reveal what people are willing to accept, and faithful witnesses are responsible to speak truthfully about what God has done.
1That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, concerning the Word of life
2(and the life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us);
3that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us. Yes, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
14We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world.
10He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in him. He who doesn`t believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.
6This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood.
8For there are three who bear witness, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one.
9If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is God`s testimony which he has testified concerning his Son.
8whom not having known you love; on whom, though now you don`t see him, yet believing, you rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory --
9receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
11Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lust, which war against the soul;
12having good behavior among the nations, so in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.
9But you are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God`s own possession, that you may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:
16having a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.
4They think it is strange that you don`t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming:
5who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
12Through Silvanus, our faithful brother, as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.
1The elder, to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all those who know the truth;
13The children of your chosen sister greet you. Amen.
2for the truth`s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever:
3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father.
12For this cause I suffer also these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.
13Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
8Don`t be ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner; but suffer hardship with the gospel according to the power of God,
2The things which you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
17But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
2preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching.
21Of the men therefore who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,
22beginning from the baptism of John, to the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection."
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth."
39We are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed, hanging him on a tree.
40God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed,
41not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42He charged us to preach to the people, and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead.
43All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins."
32This Jesus God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
14He said, `The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
15For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
15I said, `Who are you, Lord?` He said, `I am Jesus, whom you persecute.
16But arise, and stand on your feet, for to this end have I appeared to you, to appoint you a servant and a witness both of the things which you have seen, and of the things which I will reveal to you;
17delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom I send you,
18to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me.`
15and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, whereof we are witnesses.
20for we can`t help telling the things which we saw and heard."
32We are His witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
19This is John`s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
20He confessed, and didn`t deny, but he confessed, "I am not the Christ."
21They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."
22They said therefore to him, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
23He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,` as Isaiah the prophet said."
24The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
25They asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26John answered them, "I baptize in water, but among you stands one whom you don`t know,
27he who comes after me, whose sandal strap I`m not worthy to untie."
28These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29On the next day, he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is he of whom I said, `After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.`
31I didn`t know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: that he would be revealed to Israel."
32John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him.
33I didn`t recognize him, but he who sent me to baptize in water, he said to me, `On whoever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.`
34I have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God."
6There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.
7The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him.
8He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light.
37If I don`t do the works of my Father, don`t believe me.
38But if I do them, though you don`t believe me, believe the works; that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."
35He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you also may believe.
24This is the disciple who testifies about these things, and wrote these things. We know that his witness is true.
27John answered, "A man can receive nothing, unless it has been given him from heaven.
28You yourselves testify about me, that I said, `I am not the Christ,` but, `I have been sent before him.`
29He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom`s voice. This, my joy, therefore is made full.
30He must increase, but I must decrease.
31He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the Earth belongs to the Earth, and speaks of the Earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
32What he has seen and heard, of that he testifies; and no one receives his witness.
33He who has received his witness has set his seal to this, that God is true.
34For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God gives the Spirit without measure.
35The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.
36He who believes in the Son has eternal life, but he who disobeys the Son won`t see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."
31"If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.
32It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true.
33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.
34But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.
35He was the lamp that burns and shines, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
36But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.
37The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.
38You don`t have his word living in you; for whom he sent, him you don`t believe.
39You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.
40Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.
13The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your witness is not valid."
14Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my witness is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don`t know where I came from, or where I am going.
15You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.
16Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.
17It`s also written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid.
18I am he who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."
14But I was willing to do nothing without your consent, that your goodness would not be as of necessity, but of free will.
21Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even beyond what I say.
5hearing of your love, and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all the saints;
6that the fellowship of your faith may become effective, in the knowledge of every good thing which is in us, in Christ Jesus.
7For we have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.
2who testified to God`s word, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, about everything that he saw.
9I John, your brother and partaker with you in oppression and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God`s Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ.
3I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.
4These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands, standing before the Lord of the earth.
5If anyone desires to harm them, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies. If anyone desires to harm them, he must be killed in this way.
6These have the power to shut up the sky, that it may not rain during the days of their prophecy. They have power over the waters, to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.
7When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them, and kill them.
11They overcame him because of the Lamb`s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn`t love their life, even to death.
10I fell down before his feet to worship him. He said to me, "Look! Don`t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy."
4I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as didn`t worship the beast nor his image, and didn`t receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived, and reigned with Christ one thousand years.
9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.
