1:11Meaning
Paul’s appointed roles Paul says his connection to “this” message includes a formal assignment: he was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher focused on the Gentiles. The point is that his work has defined responsibilities—public announcing, authorized sending, and instruction—directed outward beyond Jewish circles.
Unit 2 (v. 12a): Suffering flows from the assignment
Paul links his hardship directly to that appointment: “for this cause I suffer.” The suffering is not presented as random misfortune but as a consequence of the work he has been given.
Unit 3 (v. 12b): Not ashamed because he knows whom he trusted
Paul denies that his suffering creates embarrassment. His reason is relational and personal: he knows the one he has believed. Confidence is grounded in the character and reliability of the trusted person, not in Paul’s current circumstances.
Unit 4 (v. 12c): Convinced of protection until “that day”
Paul adds a settled conviction that this trusted one is able to guard what Paul has “committed” to him. The guarding lasts “against that day,” pointing to a recognized future moment of evaluation or resolution that frames present suffering as temporary.
