Suffering and hope in the Bible

6Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been put to grief in various trials,

7that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ --

19For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.

20For what glory is it, if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.

21For to this were you called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps,

22who did not sin, "neither was deceit found in his mouth."

23Who, when he was reviled, didn`t revile back. When he suffered, didn`t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

14But even if you should suffer for righteousness` sake, you are blessed. "Don`t fear what they fear, neither be troubled."

15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear:

16having a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ.

17For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil.

12Beloved, don`t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

13But because you are partakers of Christ`s sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also you may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.

15For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or as a meddler in other men`s matters.

16But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.

19Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

9Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.

10But may the God of all grace (who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus), after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

6You became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,

14For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews;

3that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task.

4For most assuredly, when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we are to suffer affliction, even as it happened, and you know.

7for this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith.

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;

4who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

5For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ.

6But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which works in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.

7Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.

8For we don`t desire to have you uninformed, brothers, concerning our affliction which happened to us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, so much that we despaired even of life.

9Yes, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead,

10who delivered us out of so great a death, and does deliver; on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;

11you also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed on us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on your behalf.

23Are they servants of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I am more so; in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths often.

24Five times from the Jews I received forty stripes minus one.

25Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I suffered shipwreck. I have been a night and a day in the deep.

26I have been in travels often, perils of rivers, perils of robbers, perils from my countrymen, perils from the Gentiles, perils in the city, perils in the wilderness, perils in the sea, perils among false brothers;

27labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, and in cold and nakedness.

28Besides those things that are outside, there is that which presses on me daily, anxiety for all the assemblies.

29Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is caused to stumble, and I don`t burn?

7By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, that I should not be exalted excessively.

8Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

9He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

10Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ`s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.

16Therefore we don`t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

17For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory;

18while we don`t look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.

8We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair;

9pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;

10always carrying in the body the putting to death of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

11For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus` sake, that the life also of Jesus may be revealed in our mortal flesh.

12So then death works in us, but life in you.

3We give no occasion of stumbling in anything, that our service may not be blamed,

4but in everything commending ourselves, as servants of God, in great endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses,

5in beatings, in imprisonments, in riots, in labors, in watchings, in fastings;

6in pureness, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love,

7in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

8by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true;

9as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and not killed;

10as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

12For this cause I suffer also these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.

8Don`t be ashamed therefore of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner; but suffer hardship with the gospel according to the power of God,

3You therefore must endure hardship, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

9in which I suffer hardship to bonds, as a criminal. But God`s word isn`t bound.

11persecutions, and sufferings; those things that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; those persecutions that I endured. Out of them all the Lord delivered me.

12Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

16At my first defense, no one took my part, but all left me. May it not be held against them.

5But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let`s go into Judea again."

8The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"

9Jesus answered, "Aren`t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn`t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn`t in him."

11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."

12The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

14So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.

15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let`s go to him."

16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let`s go also, that we may die with him."

9A large crowd therefore of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came, not for Jesus` sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10But the chief priests conspired to also put Lazarus to death,

11because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

18If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

19If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

20Remember the word that I said to you: `A servant is not greater than his lord.` If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

21But all these things will they do to you for my name`s sake, because they don`t know him who sent me.

1"These things have I spoken to you, so that you wouldn`t be caused to stumble.

2They will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.

3They will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me.

4But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn`t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.

20Most assuredly I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

21A woman, when she is in travail, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn`t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a child is born into the world.

22You therefore now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.

2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples.

3Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming on him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"

5They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

6When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

8Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"

9that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."

10Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest`s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant`s name was Malchus.

11Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put up the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?"

16Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away.

17He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called "The place of a skull," which is called in Hebrew, "Golgotha,"

18where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle.

1After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee, for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if any man would confess him as Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

23Therefore his parents said, "He is of age. Ask him."

32They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.

33"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles.

34They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again."

9But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. Before governors and kings will you stand for my sake, for a testimony to them.

10The gospel must first be preached to all the nations.

11When they lead you away and deliver you up, don`t be anxious beforehand, or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

12"Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.

13You will be hated by all men for my name`s sake, but he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.

32They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I pray."

33He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly alarmed and distressed.

34He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch."

35He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.

36He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I want, but what you want."

37He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn`t you watch one hour?

38Watch and pray, that you not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

39Again he went away, and prayed, saying the same words.

40Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn`t know what to answer him.

41He came the third time, and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42Arise, let us be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand."

1Immediately in the morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate.

2Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered, "So you say."

3The chief priests accused him of many things.

4Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they testify against you!"

5But Jesus made no further answer, so Pilate marveled.

6Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him.

7There was one called Barabbas, bound with those who had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder.

8The multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them.

9Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

10For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.

11But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead.

12Pilate again asked them, "What then should I do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

13They cried out again, "Crucify him!"

14Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly, "Crucify him!"

15Pilate, wishing to please the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and delivered Jesus, when he had flogged him, to be crucified.

16The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they called together the whole cohort.

17They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

18They began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

19They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him.

20When they had mocked him, they took the purple off of him, and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him.

33When the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is, being interpreted, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

35Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Behold, he calls Elijah."

36One ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Let him be. Let`s see whether Elijah comes to take him down."

37Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit.

38The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.

39When the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

40There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

14King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, "John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers work in him."

15But others said, "It is Elijah." Others said, "It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets."

16But Herod, when he heard this, said, "This is John, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead."

17For Herod himself had sent out and laid hold on John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip`s wife, for he had married her.

18For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother`s wife."

19Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn`t,

20for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.

21When a convenient day had come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper for his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the young lady, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you."

23He swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom."

24She went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" She said, "The head of John the Baptizer."

25She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptizer on a platter."

26The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn`t wish to refuse her.

27Immediately the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John`s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

29When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

31He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

32He spoke to them openly. Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

33But he, turning around, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God, but the things of men."

30They went forth from there, and passed through Galilee. He didn`t want anyone to know it.

31For he taught his disciples, and said to them, "The Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, on the third day he will rise again."

32But they didn`t understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

12Now I desire to have you know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the gospel;

13so that my bonds became revealed in Christ throughout the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest;

14and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear.

29Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf,

30having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear is in me.

7It is even right for me to think this way on behalf of all of you, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as, both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace.

17Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.

10that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed to his death;

18For many walk, of whom I told you often, and now tell you even weeping, as the enemies of the cross of Christ,

14However you did well that you had fellowship with my affliction.

9I John, your brother and partaker with you in oppression and kingdom and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God`s Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

7When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them, and kill them.

8Their dead bodies will be in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

9From among the peoples, tribes, languages, and nations will people look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not allow their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.

10Those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, and make merry. They will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

11They overcame him because of the Lamb`s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn`t love their life, even to death.

7It was given to him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him.

8All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed.

9If anyone has an ear, let him hear.

10If anyone gathers into captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone will kill with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

13"I know your works and where you dwell, where Satan`s throne is. You hold firmly to my name, and didn`t deny my faith, even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

9"I know your oppression, and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

10Don`t be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown of life.

9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.

10They cried with a loud voice, saying, "How long, Master, the holy and true, do you not judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

11There was given to each one of them a white robe. It was said to them that they should rest yet for a little time, until their fellow servants and their brothers, who would also be killed even as they were, had been fulfilled.

3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering works perseverance;

4and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope:

5and hope doesn`t disappoint us, because God`s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given to us.

18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed toward us.

22For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.

25But if we hope for that which we don`t see, we wait for it with patience.
