4:1Meaning
Mercy received, endurance maintained Paul draws a conclusion from what he has been explaining: since he has “this ministry,” and since he received mercy to have it, he does not lose heart. The ministry is treated as something given, not self-made, and mercy is presented as the reason he can keep going rather than quitting.
Unit 2 (v. 2a): A deliberate break with shameful secrecy
Paul says he has renounced “the hidden things of shame.” The point is a clear refusal to use practices that depend on concealment and would be embarrassing if brought into the open.
Unit 3 (v. 2b): No trickery, no twisting God’s message
He specifies what he will not do: he will not “walk in craftiness,” and he will not handle the word of God deceitfully—using it in a misleading way or adjusting it to win outcomes. The refusal is about both method (trickery) and message (not altering what is said).
Unit 4 (v. 2c): Open truth aimed at conscience, under God’s gaze
Instead, Paul describes a positive approach: by openly displaying the truth, he seeks to “commend” himself to every person’s conscience, and he does this “in the sight of God.” The validation he seeks is not secret approval but a transparent kind that can be weighed internally by hearers and is accountable to God.
