Keep reminding; warn before the Lord Paul tells Timothy to “remind them of these things,” pointing back to the preceding teaching (especially 2:11–13). Timothy must also give a serious warning “in the sight of the Lord,” meaning the charge is made with God as witness and judge of the community’s conduct.

Literary Context
These lines sit inside a chain of ministry instructions in 2 Timothy 2. Just before, Paul summarizes a trustworthy saying about endurance and loyalty (2:11–13), and then immediately turns to what Timothy must do with that teaching: repeat it and protect the church from unhelpful controversy. What follows after v.15 continues the same concern by giving negative examples of speech that spreads harm and diverts people (2:16–18). So vv.14–15 function as a hinge: they move from the content Timothy is to pass on to the manner and discipline with which he must teach and correct.
Historical Context
2 Timothy is commonly located in the mid-to-late 60s AD within the Roman Empire, when Christian groups faced social suspicion and, at times, legal pressure. The letter presents Paul as imprisoned and expecting a grim outcome, which makes his instructions weighty and urgent. In that setting, community teaching happened largely through spoken instruction, reading of texts, and debate in gatherings, so uncontrolled quarrels could quickly fracture trust and mislead less-established hearers. Paul’s language assumes leaders like Timothy must guide public speech, avoid reputation-damaging missteps, and teach carefully under the awareness of God’s oversight.
