Current coverage includes 1 John, 1 Timothy, 2 John, 2 Peter, 2 Thessalonians, 2 Timothy, James, Jeremiah, Jude, Micah, Titus.
2 Peter warns that false teachers secretly introduce destructive ideas, exploit others, and appeal to desires. Their words distort truth and their lives betray their message, so believers must be discerning and steadfast to avoid being carried away.
This theme appears in passages such as 1 John, 2 John, Titus, 2 Timothy, where the Bible develops it through story, instruction, warning, and promise. In 1 John 1:6–7 the writer contrasts two claimed “paths” of life. A person may say they share life with God, yet if their daily pattern is described as “walking in darkness,” their claim is false and they are not living truthfully. In 2 John 1:1–3, the writer calls himself “the elder” and addresses “the elect lady and her children.” He says his love for them is “in truth,” and that this love is shared by all who have come to know the truth.
Start with 1 John 1:6, 2 John 1:1, Titus 1:9, then follow the related passages in their own setting before drawing broad conclusions.
A theme page is strongest when it follows the Bible's own contexts. The goal is not to collect matching words, but to see how repeated ideas develop across passages, books, and the whole biblical story.
6If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and don`t tell the truth.
8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
21I have not written to you because you don`t know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
26These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray.
7Little children, let no one lead you astray. He who does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
1Beloved, don`t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
6We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn`t listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
20We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
3As I exhorted you to stay at Ephesus, when I was going into Macedonia, that you might charge certain men not to teach a different doctrine,
4neither to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes, rather than God`s stewardship, which is in faith --
6from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned aside to vain talking;
7desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm.
8But we know that the law is good, if a man uses it lawfully,
9as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave-traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for any other thing contrary to the sound doctrine;
11according to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
1But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,
2through the hypocrisy of men who speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;
3forbidding marriage and commanding to abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
20Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from the empty chatter and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so called;
21which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
3If anyone teaches a different doctrine, and doesn`t consent to sound words, the words of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4he is conceited, knowing nothing, but obsessed with arguments, disputes, and word battles, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions,
5constant friction of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. Withdraw yourself from such.
1The elder, to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all those who know the truth;
10If anyone comes to you, and doesn`t bring this teaching, don`t receive him into your house, and don`t welcome him,
11for he who welcomes him participates in his evil works.
2for the truth`s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever:
4I rejoice greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, even as we have been commanded by the Father.
7For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don`t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the Antichrist.
8Watch yourselves, that we don`t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward.
9Whoever transgresses and doesn`t remain in the teaching of Christ, doesn`t have God. He who remains in the teaching, the same has both the Father and the Son.
1But there also arose false prophets among the people, as among you also there will be false teachers, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master who bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction.
18For, uttering great swelling words of emptiness, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by licentiousness, those who are indeed escaping from those who live in error;
19promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for by whom a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage.
2Many will follow their destructive ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned.
3In covetousness will they exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn`t linger, and their destruction will not slumber.
16as also in all of his letters, speaking in them of these things. In those are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they do also to the other scriptures, to their own destruction.
17You therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness.
10and with all deception of wickedness for those who are being lost, because they didn`t receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11Because of this, God sends them a working of error, that they should believe a lie;
12that they all might be judged who didn`t believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2to the end that you won`t be quickly shaken in your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as from us, saying that the day of Christ had come.
3Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction,
9even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
14Remind them of these things, charging them in the sight of the Lord, that they don`t argue about words, to no profit, to the subverting of those who hear.
16But shun empty chatter, for they will proceed further in ungodliness,
17and their word will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
18men who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.
5holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof. Turn away from these, also.
3For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts;
4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables.
13Let no man say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God," for God can`t be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.
14But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
15Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.
16Don`t be deceived, my beloved brothers.
17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.
18Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
22But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves.
26If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious, while he doesn`t bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man`s religion is worthless.
14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don`t boast and don`t lie against the truth.
15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.
16For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.
12But above all things, my brothers, don`t swear, neither by heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath; but let your yes be yes, and your no, no; so that you don`t fall into hypocrisy.
12They have denied Yahweh, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come on us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done to them.
30A wonderful and horrible thing is happen in the land:
31the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do in the end of it?
13For from the least of them even to the greatest of them everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
14They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
15Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, says Yahweh.
16Thus says Yahweh, Stand you in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way; and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls: but they said, We will not walk [therein].
17I set watchmen over you, [saying], Listen to the sound of the trumpet; but they said, We will not listen.
18Therefore hear, you nations, and know, congregation, what is among them.
19Hear, earth: behold, I will bring evil on this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it.
20To what purpose comes there to me frankincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing to me.
4Don`t you trust in lying words, saying, The temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, are these.
8Behold, you trust in lying words, that can`t profit.
9Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods that you have not known,
10and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that you may do all these abominations?
11Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, says Yahweh.
8How do you say, We are wise, and the law of Yahweh is with us? But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has worked falsely.
9The wise men are put to shame, they are dismayed and taken: behold, they have rejected the word of Yahweh; and what manner of wisdom is in them?
10Therefore will I give their wives to others, and their fields to those who shall possess them: for everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest every one deals falsely.
11They have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.
12Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among those who fall; in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, says Yahweh.
3They bend their tongue, [as it were] their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they don`t know me, says Yahweh.
4Take you heed everyone of his neighbor, and don`t you trust in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go about with slanders.
5They will deceive everyone his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity.
6Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, says Yahweh.
10But these speak evil of whatever things they don`t know. What they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed.
12These are hidden rocky reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you, shepherds who without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn leaves without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
16These are murmurers and complainers, walking after their lusts (and their mouth speaks proud things), showing respect of persons for the sake of advantage.
19These are they who cause divisions, and are sensual, not having the Spirit.
4For there are certain men who crept in secretly, even they who were of old written of beforehand to this condemnation: ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master, God, and Lord, Jesus Christ.
8Yet in like manner these also in their dreaming defile the flesh, despise authority, and slander celestial beings.
10Arise you, and depart; for this is not your resting-place; because of uncleanness that destroys, even with a grievous destruction.
11If a man walking in a spirit of falsehood do lie, [saying], I will prophesy to you of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
6Don`t you prophesy, [thus] they prophesy. They shall not prophesy to these: reproaches shall not depart.
7Shall it be said, O house of Jacob, Is the Spirit of Yahweh straitened? are these his doings? Do not my words do good to him who walks blamelessly?
11The heads of it judge for reward, and the priests of it teach for hire, and the prophets of it divine for money: yet they lean on Yahweh, and say, Is not Yahweh in the midst of us? no evil shall come on us.
5Thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who make my people to err; who bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and whoever doesn`t put into their mouths, they even prepare war against him:
6Therefore it shall be night to you, that you shall have no vision; and it shall be dark to you, that you shall not divine; and the sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them.
7The seers shall be put to shame, and the diviners confounded; yes, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God.
3Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asks, and the judge [is ready] for a reward; and the great man, he utters the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.
4The best of them is as a brier; the most upright is [worse] than a thorn hedge: the day of your watchmen, even your visitation, is come; now shall be their perplexity.
5Don`t you trust in a neighbor; don`t you put confidence in a friend; keep the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom.
6For the son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man`s enemies are the men of his own house.
10For there are also many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain`s sake.
14not paying attention to Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
16They profess that they know God, but by their works they deny him, being abominable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.
9holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict those who contradict him.
