Literary Context
These verses sit inside Jeremiah’s larger lament and intercession during a crisis affecting Judah (Jeremiah 14). The chapter moves between describing disaster, voicing communal grief, and pleading for mercy, while also confronting why relief is not coming. In that setting, vv. 13–16 explain a competing “comfort” narrative: prophets promising safety. The passage shifts from Jeremiah’s complaint (what the prophets are saying) to Yahweh’s rebuttal (they were not authorized) and then to a matching sentence against both the speakers and their audience.
Historical Context
Jeremiah’s ministry unfolded in Judah’s last decades before Jerusalem’s fall, when political pressure and regional warfare made the threats of invasion and shortage feel immediate and plausible. Religious leadership was not unified; multiple voices claimed to speak for Yahweh while offering different readings of the moment. Public assurances of security could stabilize morale and support official policy, especially in Jerusalem. Against that backdrop, the text depicts a conflict over who truly carries Yahweh’s message, and it ties that conflict to concrete outcomes: siege-like conditions, hunger, and mass death in the city.
Theological Significance
Jeremiah brings a problem to Yahweh: prophets in Judah keep promising the opposite of what Jeremiah has been warning—no war (“sword”) and no famine, only “assured peace” in Jerusalem (v.13). The passage then gives Yahweh’s direct evaluation: these prophets are not authorized by him and are speaking lies in his name (v.14). What “assured peace” means (v.13). Some take it mainly as political-military security (no invasion, no siege conditions). Others read it more broadly as a promise of overall well-being and stability anchored in religious confidence about the city/temple.
What “divination” implies (v.14). Some understand it as literal involvement in forbidden techniques of gaining messages. Others take it as Jeremiah’s way of classifying their “prophecies” as functionally the same as pagan practices—unauthorized, self-serving claims dressed up as divine speech.
How to read “I will pour their wickedness on them” (v.16). Some read it as God actively imposing penalty; others hear it as God handing them over to consequences that match their wrongdoing. Either way, the line ties the disaster to “their wickedness,” not to an accident of history.
The key phrases are brief and metaphorical (“assured peace,” “divination,” “pour…wickedness”), and the passage compresses both divine action and human responsibility into a few lines. That leaves room to ask how literal or expansive each expression is, and how directly God’s action relates to the disaster events.
Explicitly, the text claims that messages of safety can be false even when delivered “in Yahweh’s name,” and that authorization (“I did not send…command…speak,” v.14) is the decisive issue. It also presents a moral logic: deceptive speech by leaders and misplaced trust by hearers are both implicated in the coming judgment (vv.15–16). The passage contributes a sober picture of communal accountability, where public religious claims shape expectations—and can intensify ruin when they are detached from Yahweh’s actual word (Jeremiah 14:13–14:16).
