Verse by Verse
Creation as the basis for authority God begins with a sweeping claim: he made the earth, human beings, and animals by “great power” and an “outstretched arm.” Because he is the maker, he also claims the right to give the earth’s realms to whoever he thinks is appropriate.
A specific grant of rule to Babylon’s king God then applies that general right to a particular decision “now”: he has given “all these lands” into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, identified as king of Babylon and called “my servant.” The grant is pictured as real control, and it even includes authority over “the animals of the field” to serve him.
Scope, duration, and reversal The result is stated broadly: “all the nations” will serve Nebuchadnezzar, then his son, then his grandson. But this servitude has an endpoint: it lasts “until the time of his own land” comes. After that, the direction reverses—many nations and “great kings” will make Babylon (and/or its ruler) their servant.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Jeremiah’s message to Judah and neighboring states during a tense political moment when some leaders wanted to resist Babylon. Chapter 27 presents Jeremiah’s argument as a direct claim from God: international control is not only a matter of armies but of who has authority to assign rule. Verses 5–7 function like the core rationale. First comes the claim of creation and ownership, then the specific appointment of Babylon’s king, then the time-limited scope of that appointment and its eventual reversal.
Historical Context
Jeremiah speaks in the period when Babylon had become the dominant regional empire and expected surrounding kingdoms to submit and pay tribute. Judah and its neighbors faced pressure to join anti-Babylon coalitions, while Babylon enforced loyalty through vassal arrangements and deportations. Nebuchadnezzar II’s reign marked sustained Babylonian control over the Levant, though that control did not last forever. The passage reflects this imperial reality: subjugation of “many nations” under Babylon followed later by Babylon’s own subjugation when the balance of power changed.
Theological Significance
Jeremiah 27:5–7 presents God as the maker and owner of the world: earth, people, and animals exist by his “great power” and “outstretched arm.” From that stated basis (an explicit textual claim), God also claims the right to assign control of “the earth” to whomever he judges appropriate (also explicit).

Two main questions affect how broadly the claims are taken.
First, what counts as “all these lands”? Some read it narrowly as the lands in Jeremiah’s immediate message to surrounding kingdoms (the region under Babylon’s pressure at the time). Others read it more expansively as a sweeping statement about God handing the whole known world to Babylon’s ruler.
Second, what does it mean that Nebuchadnezzar is called “my servant”? Many understand it as functional: God is using a foreign king as an instrument to accomplish a purpose, without implying the king shares Israel’s faith. Others think the title suggests a closer kind of divine commissioning, while still not necessarily describing personal devotion.
Why the disagreement exists The wording is broad (“all these lands,” “all the nations”) while the historical setting is specific (a regional crisis). Also, the phrase “my servant” is honorific in some biblical contexts but can also be used for someone serving God’s plans without intending to.
What this passage clearly contributes This text explicitly links God’s authority over rulers to God’s role as creator. It also portrays international empires as real political forces yet not ultimate: their rise is presented as assigned and their fall as scheduled. The passage’s claim is not merely that Babylon will win, but that Babylon’s dominance is time-limited and subject to reversal when “the time of his own land” arrives (a phrase that points to Babylon’s eventual reckoning rather than endless rule).
