A set term, then Yahweh acts Yahweh states a condition and a timing: when seventy years for Babylon are completed, he will “visit” his people—meaning he will intervene on their behalf. He will carry out his “good word” by causing them to return to “this place,” pointing to their homeland as the destination.
The intention behind the promise Yahweh explains that his plans toward them are not aimed at harm but at “peace” and a future with hope. The point is to reinterpret the exile’s meaning: despite present hardship, the direction of Yahweh’s intention is toward restoration rather than destruction.
The described human response The people are pictured as turning toward Yahweh: they will call on him, go and pray, and Yahweh will listen. Seeking is not casual; they will find him when they search “with all your heart,” describing a whole-person, sincere pursuit rather than a divided loyalty.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside Jeremiah’s message sent to Judeans living in exile in Babylon (Jeremiah 29). The larger chapter counters voices promising an immediate end to exile, instead urging the exiles to settle down and wait out the appointed time (see the flow just before this section). Verses 10–14 provide the core reassurance: the exile has a limit, and Yahweh’s word about return will be carried out. The logic then moves from promise (Yahweh will act) to response (the people will seek), and back to promise (Yahweh will restore and gather).
Historical Context
The setting is the Babylonian exile that followed Babylon’s domination of Judah and the deportation of many Judeans to Babylon. The community addressed is living away from Jerusalem and the land, pressured by dislocation, uncertainty, and competing claims about how soon political conditions might change. “Seventy years” functions as a defined span tied to Babylon’s period of dominance, presenting exile as neither random nor endless. The promise of regathering “from all the nations” reflects a scattered population, not only a single group in one location, and envisions return to their former homeland.
Theological Significance
These verses present exile as time-bound rather than endless. First, “seventy years”: some take it as a precise timeline tied to identifiable historical start/end points; others take it as a rounded, conventional way of saying “a full, complete span,” still real and bounded but not meant for calendar math.
Second, “from all the nations…all the places”: some read it as describing the same Babylon-exile community now scattered more widely across the empire; others hear language that reaches beyond one deportation wave, anticipating a wider dispersion and a more comprehensive regathering.
The text uses time and geography language that can function either strictly or more generally. “Seventy years” can be read as a counted duration or as a complete period, and the passage itself does not specify the exact starting marker. Likewise, “all the nations” can describe broad scattering without clarifying whether it is limited to the current exile generation or speaks more expansively.
The passage contributes a clear theology of Yahweh’s purposeful governance of judgment and restoration: exile is neither meaningless nor permanent; Yahweh’s “good word” will be carried out (explicit claim). It also portrays restored life with Yahweh as involving both divine initiative (“I will…”) and a described human response of wholehearted seeking and prayer (explicit claim), with the inference that renewed relationship is central to the promised return. The promised outcome is not mere survival but a future characterized by “peace” and hope (explicit claim).
