Literary Context
Psalm 110 is a short, tightly framed royal poem that presents an elevated view of a ruler’s status and mission. Verse 1 sets the scene with Yahweh granting the ruler an honored place and anticipating the defeat of opponents. Verse 2 continues that movement by describing how the ruler’s authority is actively projected “out of Zion,” then it shifts to an imperative that calls for confident governance in a hostile environment. The psalm’s later lines (vv. 3–7) develop the ruler’s support, conflict, and outcomes, so verse 2 functions as an early, programmatic statement of rule.
