138:1Meaning
Wholehearted, public praise The speaker commits to thanking God with an undivided heart—nothing held back. This gratitude is expressed as song (“sing praises”) and is intentionally done “before the gods,” meaning the praise is not private or embarrassed; it is performed in a setting where other claimed powers, or socially significant authorities, are present.
Unit 2 (v. 2a): Bodily posture and direction of worship
The speaker adds a physical act: bowing down. The bowing is oriented “toward” God’s “holy temple,” presenting worship as directed, reverent, and anchored to the recognized place of God’s worship.
Unit 3 (v. 2b–2c): Reasons for thanks—Name, loyal kindness, truth, and God’s honoring of his Word
The speaker thanks God’s “Name,” focusing on God’s revealed identity and reputation. Two qualities are highlighted as grounds for gratitude: “lovingkindness” (steadfast loyal care) and “truth” (reliability). The final line explains this further: God has greatly honored his “Name” and his “Word,” placing them “above all,” so the praise responds to God’s demonstrated commitment to who he is and what he has spoken.
