Literary Context
Psalm 42 is a lament that moves between longing for God, remembering past worship, describing present distress, and speaking hope back to the self. Verses 9–10 sit in the complaint portion, where the psalmist addresses God directly and names what feels unbearable. The logic moves from prayer (“I will say to God”) to two “why” questions (forgotten; forced mourning) and then to a vivid depiction of the enemy’s ongoing taunts. The repeated challenge “Where is your God?” matches earlier refrains in the psalm (cf. Psalm 42:3).
