Unit 1 (v. 6a): Pull the “bite” out of their mouths
The speaker asks God to "break their teeth" right where the danger is located: "in their mouth." The point is to remove their capacity to injure—like taking away the tools of harm—so that their threats cannot land.
Unit 2 (v. 6b): Treat them like young lions and remove their fangs
The prayer intensifies the picture: these enemies are like young lions with “great teeth,” dangerous and energetic. Addressing Yahweh by name, the speaker asks for those powerful teeth to be broken out, again aiming at disabling violence rather than describing a fair contest.
Unit 3 (v. 7a): Let them disappear like running water
The request shifts from breaking to dissolving: let them “vanish” the way water flows away and is gone. The image suggests their strength and presence should drain off quickly, leaving no lasting ability to dominate.
Unit 4 (v. 7b): Make their weapons fail when they prepare to shoot
Even if they are ready to attack—"when they draw the bow"—the speaker asks that their arrows become ineffective, “blunt,” so the planned strike cannot penetrate. The prayer targets the moment of execution: not just hostile intent, but hostile impact.
