Amos context is set in the kingdom period, where Israel's monarchy from David and Solomon to exile.
Amos announces that God's justice reaches every nation and begins with his own people. Israel's wealth, worship, and confidence cannot cover exploitation of the poor or a life out of line with covenant faithfulness.
The book opens with judgment oracles against the nations, then turns the force of the message onto Israel. Sermons, laments, and visions expose social violence and religious hypocrisy before ending with a promise that God will restore David's fallen shelter.
Read Amos as a prophetic shock meant to wake a secure audience. Notice how the circle of judgment tightens, how worship language is tested by justice, and how the final promise keeps judgment from becoming the last word.
Amos speaks during the prosperity of Jeroboam II in the northern kingdom, before Assyria's full judgment arrives. Economic success and religious activity made Israel look strong, but the prophet exposes deep injustice underneath the surface.
