Literary Context
This verse concludes the lesson drawn from the Rechabites in Jeremiah 35. Earlier in the chapter, Jeremiah uses a real-life test to show the Rechabites’ steady obedience to their ancestor’s instructions, then contrasts it with Judah’s refusal to obey Yahweh’s repeated words (Jeremiah 35:12–16). Verse 17 follows that comparison by moving from diagnosis to consequence: because Judah ignored ongoing prophetic warnings, Yahweh now declares the promised calamity will come. The logic links prior speech and summons to present accountability.
